This documentation project manifested from my love of route planning and map data, and my love of the Ghost Bikes concept. My initial intent was to simply create a KML of all Chicago area Ghost Bike locations, since it did not seem to yet exist, that being the standard map data file format used by common apps and websites.
I exhaustively read all content on pertinent websites and even mailing list history and press to consolidate the information here. Finally, in mid-November 2009 a dozen pals did a tour of the nine existing at that time to accumulate the photos and test the route. Later the Livingston bike was added.
Note that in current revision I specifically do not attempt to cover in much depth. Just location, date, photo, and sign, then links. Anything more would be too little. I've had the privilege of reading and hearing many hours of details on each, and personally I cannot bear to summarize. Those truly interested can follow the links provided. If anyone is willing and able to write some rich texts, I'd welcome and publish here. But as is, I consider this project done, sadly but frankly until change inevitably occurs.
Next planned work:
Add more offsite links.
Get reciprocal links.
Follow-up GhostBikes.org to update their database.
